UnPro Wrestling ran its debut show on August 20th in Hackney at the Hackney Showroom and BritWres Review was there in attendance to soak up the action. The show featured a number of PROGRESS Wrestling talents, all competing for the right to be crowned the first ever UnPro Wrestling champion as on the undercard was four qualifying matches for a big four corners main event with the winner being crowned the first ever champion of this brand new promotion. Shockingly the doors opened on time, in fact, 15 minutes early and even started on time. This is something that is fresh and rarely seen in BritWres and this reviewer appreciated it.
Damon Moser beat Cara Noir to advance in the UnPro Wrestling title tournament This match was actually quite a decent opener and is probably one of my favourite Damon Moser matches I've ever seen. In PROGRESS, his matches are genuinely dull as dishwater but here he put in a shift with the incredibly reliable Cara Noir. Both men beat the hell out of one another with stiff kicks and chops. Noir targeted Moser's groin as well later on firing up Moser and the crowd. They brawled on the outside as well, taking the fight into the crowd. Towards the end, Noir covered Moser in some lip stick and Moser, who was not a fan of this, got very angry and unloaded with a barrage of strikes to Noir and finished him off with a lariat to advance. Bill Eaver pinned Zack Gibson to advance in the UnPro Wrestling title tournament Up next was the heat magnet, Zack Gibson who was, as usual, incredibly unpopular with this crowd. It seemed as if Gibson was displeased with the new company's name and found it unprofessional. Bill Eaver and Gibson had a decent back and forth match that saw Gibson target the elbow and arms of Eaver throughout. Eaver seems to be settling more into a comedy wrestler role as well by doing more comedy spots as usual and so he should as he was a bit of a wash out as a serious wrestler last year. It seemed to the world Gibson would lock in the Shankley Gates, but Eaver was having none of it and picked up the win the advance to the main event four way. Jack Sexsmith dropped Sebastian to advance in the UnPro Wrestling title tournament Jack Sexsmith was up next facing his old nemesis Seb and this was by far the best match on the entire card so far. Sexsmith was by far the most over face on the show and, well Seb is Seb, and he was quickly re-established as a strong, very unlikeable heel. This was probably the best work I've seen Seb do. It was even better than his cheap heat tactics in PROGRESS, and by the end of the show, I was genuinely enjoying his work as the dick heel. Sexsmith couldn't have been more over and let fans take their shots at Seb after he had been spitting water over everyone early on. Seb let the punters chop him as Sexsmith held him which made a lot of people at ringside very happy indeed. Then the story of match and show played out as Sexsmith went up top and came down landing awkwardly on his knee and twisting it. It would seem the injury angle was a theme played up often in this show. Seb went to work over Sexsmith's knee and targeted it wrapping it around the ring post and Working over Sexsmith with a figure four. The valiant under dog babyface Sexsmith battled back but Seb was taking every cheap shot he could but in the end, Jack caught Seb in a small package and rolled him up for the one, two and three. Roy Johnson rolled over El Ligero to advance in the UnPro Wrestling title tournament With three babyfaces advancing already and this match being two babyfaces it seemed to the world it would be an all out babyface war in the final match of the evening but alas Roy shocked us all by flipping us off (brilliant) and was actually a lot of fun as a heel going forward on this show. Roy was up against a man who had worked 12 matches that day, a true veteran and legend in BritWres - El Ligero. Both men had a decent outing. They did a nice spot on the outside when Ligs caught Roy with a swinging DDT in the crowd by springboarding off of a chair. Back in the ring, Ligero caught Roy with an infra red and crucifix cradle for two near fall attempts. Roy battled back and caught Ligero with a low blow and pump handle slam for the win. Craft Beating Company (Ashmore & Walter) downed Prince Jato and Chuck Mambo After a short intermission, we were back for the second half with Craft Beating Company taking on the ever popular Chuck Mambo and Prince Jato. This match got the crowd fired back up again and in this reviewers opinion, the right team went over. If UnPro is to continue on as a company, and it is believed it will at this point, then a strong heel unit like Ashmore & Walter is needed to be built around. They got the rub here from Mambo and jato who could be a great little addition to UnPro undercard going forward. The Craft Beating Company finished off Mambo and pinned him clean for the big win. Nina Samuels pinned Jinny Both women were again really over with the crowd and put on a decent showing here but with Jinny putting over Nina clean, I would assume she will not be doing many more appearances with the group. Or maybe UnPro are doing something different by pushing someone else apart from Jinny as its top star of its ladies division. Nina and Jinny both carried themselves like stars and looked like stars in this solid outing between the two. Finally, Roy Johnson defeated Bill Eaver, Damon Moser and Sebastian in the final of the UnPro Title Tournament to be crowned the first ever UnPro Champion. Before the bell, Sexsmith was attacked by the ever unlikeable Seb with a metal pipe. Seb nailed Sexsmith in the knee over and over again until Kieran UnPro gave him the spot in the match rather than the now injured Jack Sexsmith. Seb got his wish and was now in the main event for the belt. Early it saw both heels team up to work over the babyfaces which made sense and allowed the match to build heat. Moser and Eaver made their comeback after the heels inevitably fell out with one another. The babyfaces rushed through their spots then Sexsmith hobbled out and attacked Seb and those two ended up taking their brawl to the back. Back in the ring, Moser had Eaver in a sleeper but Roy returned with a chair and nailed both men. Roy pinned Eaver and won one, two and three. As my BritWres Review amigo, Steve pointed out that was a rather flat finish and it was, to be honest. Roy cut a promo afterwards and I seriously felt as if Sexsmith would come out and challenge Roy to a title match there and then but alas that didn't happen and the show ended on a rather sour note. Overall this show may have ended on a sour note but on the flip side, it has a strong heel champion going forward who has a number of programmes lined up for the future. So there is that. Also, the undercard of this show ranged from solid to decent and you couldn't be any happier as a promoter with this being your first show. I'm not sure if this show will be on VOD but I sure hope so as it deserves for more people to view especially the Nina Samuels v Jinny and CBC v Mambo and Jato matches. Again thanks for reading my review and as always I'll finish with "see you at the matches". @Billy_Jay83
